This is all to preface the good work of the community-based platform Black Bandcamp, which has now officially relaunched as Black Artist Database, or B.A.D. Not only has the past year made clear how unprepared people were for a plague (I mean, who is?), more importantly it revealed the growing inequity in the world and how racism, sexism, and other intersectional factors are at play. With musicians at a major loss of income without live performances, Bandcamp has scheduled specific days where 100 percent of proceeds go toward the artist, waiving the site’s revenue share. It's gratifying to finally hear all those ideas I had floating around in my head made real, with the help of my talented collaborators.Bandcamp Fridays have become sort of a musical holiday amidst the pandemic. The recording of the album was a lengthy, detailed process but, I hope, worth it. The carnyx on the album is played by the music academic and trombone virtuoso, Prof John Kenny, and its ethereal presence lends the album something special indeed. This was used by the Celts and by the Picts in a ceremonial capacity, though very likely it was also deployed as a battle device to put the wind up those pesky Romans. I think a notable aspect of the album's sound is the inclusion of an ancient instrument called the carnyx. The album is a musical flight of fancy, and dedicated to that distant group, whose influence nonetheless lives on. The product of nine months recording, this album deals with existential issues from the perspective of the Pictish people, who lived in Scotland during the time of the Roman presence and beyond.
